Parenteral nutrition, high quality polypropylene films
Whether partial or total, parenteral nutrition provides the nutritional needs of patients when they can no longer receive enteral nutrition, i.e., through the natural route. It consists of infusing the patient with a therapeutic nutrient mixture.
Many pathologies require a parenteral nutrition prescription: gastrointestinal diseases (Crohn’s disease, intestinal obstruction, etc.), upper digestive tract obstruction, and anorexia.
Parenteral
nutrition is also prescribed in post-surgery environments, comas, oncology units, pediatrics and neonatology.
Two types of products can be distinguished. Firstly, compounded preparations. They are recommended for intensive care units, for the pediatric population and for premature babies in neonatology. Due to their specific nutritional needs they are directly prepared in hospital pharmacies. Secondly, the ready-to-use nutrition formulations packaged in 2 or 3 chamber bags. With their significant advantages (extended shelf life, reduced handling, closed system, etc.), these standardized products have largely conquered the market for many years.
Unstable products that require high quality films
Developed by Polycine, APP198-LP and APP114-LP multilayer polypropylene films are produced in a class 10000 (ISO7) cleanroom environment. In addition to their proven chemical inertia which ensures the stability of packaged products, the films guarantee special barrier properties concerning water vapor, UV, and oxygen. These properties ensure optimal protection of the amino acids, particularly against oxidation, which irreparably degrades the nutritional solution. APP198-LP and APP114-LP films can be used to create internal welds to design double-chamber, triple-chamber, or multi-chamber bags.
Due to the drug’s instability once reassembled, lipids, glucose and amino acids must effectively be packaged separately. Known as peelable seals, the removable thermo-seals must therefore be strong enough not to break during transport and handling, while being easy to break by a simple hand pressure on a compartment to reconstitute the drug for its administration.
APP198-LP and APP114-LP polypropylene multilayer films therefore meet all the requirements for the manufacture of multi-compartment flexible bags. Mainly intended for parenteral nutrition solutions, they can nevertheless be customized to be compatible with other molecules.
